Couple Points on Tampa, etc.

Mon, Sep 17, 2012 at 2:19 PM

Let me start this off by saying that I am not bashing or complaining, as Godsmack has been my favorite band for 14 years now and I have seen them live 13 times. With that said...

The Tampa show musically was awesome. They give 110% effort and I've never seen anything less from them. I had a great time watching Godsmack and Staind (those are the only two bands I watched) and had pit tickets as usual. There wasn't any sort of stage set up (not even a banner which I though was odd) but I feel as though Godsmack has reached a point in their career that they can walk out on stage, have no stage show whatsoever and blow everybody away. This was the case not only tonight, but the past four shows I've seen them pay.

However, since the release of The Oracle, Godsmack has come to Florida on 4 separate tours, and I caught 5 shows all together on those four tours: Orlando, Tampa, West Palm, Orlando, Tampa. Aside from the first date which was direct support for The Oracle, the set list has been exactly the same plus or minus one song. I understand the relative ease of jumping onto a festival versus a headlining tour and the crowd that they play to while on a festival, but I just don't understand why the set list can never be changed.

I understand some songs are a staple in the live show, but it needs to evolve beyond playing a greatest hits show. Godsmack has an extensive back catalog and up until recently, they would tap into it on each tour. I recall a wide array of songs on the Faceless tour, the IV Tour and the actual Oracle tour, but over the past 18 months the set list has been nearly identical.

I may be a bit biased because I am strongly against festivals, mainly for set list and set time reasons, but this is getting to an aggravating level. I will never miss a Godsmack show, but it would be nice to change it up. The best live bands today (not including Godsmack) play a two hour show with a wide range of songs on their set lists, often times changing the set list show to show. Bands like Metallica, RHCP, Pearl Jam, and Aerosmith (to name a few) have been on the absolute top for quite some time now, yet their live show is constantly changing. Yes, there are certain staple songs that need to be played yet there are plenty of non-radio songs that are played too..

Godsmack undoubtedly have the potential to rival the longevity and success of these bands (I have no doubt they will) but evolution into more of a big time, 2 hour huge set list band needs to happen. They are much more than a greatest hits radio set band, I've seen it and I so badly want to see it again.

I do agree with you. Their shows are always spectacular and they give 110% but it would be nice to hear songs they normally don't play that are bad ass songs like "Faceless", "Releasing The Demons" and "Dead and Broken" (just to name a few).

Yes, it's me...I finally made it back here!!

xXxxGODMSMACKxXx, you've nailed it completely! I love these Boys, but I would love to hear some of the non-radio songs again live. I'm going back a few years, but did you catch the 2004 NYE show at Hard Rock Live? God, that set was incredible!! I will always be at the shows, but these Festivals are killing me...not.enough.stage.time.

I caught POD at the back stage, near the 98 Rock tent. Not a huge POD fan, but it was a nice way to pass the time. I got there early because I wanted to do the meet n greets with Staind and Smack. I did not know in order to get in the lines, you had to purchase the CDs. You know, the CDs that I purchase THE DAY THEY CAME OUT! I was so frustrated; it wasn't really about the $$, it was the point. I wanted to go back to my car and grab both disks and say "See I have them, and didn't have to wait for this show to get them!". I wasn't able to get close up when Staind was in the tent, but I got some great shots of Shannon & Tony while they were signing. Robbie was in the first chair, so it was hard to get a really good one of him.

And if one more person griped about Sully not being there, I was going to scream. I get it, I really do, he's the frontman, the most recognizable, but DAMN, show some love for the 75% of the band that did show!! And it's so funny when people weren't sure if he was there or not. Um, none of these guys look alike! Whenever someone would ask me, or I'd hear them inquire if Sully was there or not, I would really talk about the boys.

Anyhoo...to the shows. I, too, only watched Staind and Godsmack. This was the first time in a very long time that I was not in the pit. Usually Todd grabs a seat, makes sure he knows where I am down there, checks out the crowd, and all is good. I'm not sure why, but I decided to seat it with him this go around. It was so unnatural! I wanted to sneak down their so badly....but I didn't.

I was still pretty close though, good seats. Though my section throughly sucked during Staind. NO ONE was standing; I would get up periodically, but felt like a fish out of water, so I'd sit back down and rock out in my seat. NEVER AGAIN! When they played "Paper Wings" (after some douche threw a beer on Aaron), I wanted to jump up and down, sing the song at the top of my lungs, but I kept it relatively toned down. Same with "Not Again".

Between sets, after I got back from the restroom, I turned to the people behind me to let them know that I was physially uncapable of sitting during Godsmack. And I was up, from the time "For Those About to Rock" started until they walked off stage. When I got up for FTATR, some guy behind me a few rows, says, "not just yet sweetheart"...well, obviously you've haven't been to a Smack show lately because that's how it begins. He did not deter me one bit!!

I loved the Smack set, but concur with all that was said above. Hell, we didn't even get Love, Hate, Sex, Pain, which surprised me. And during "Whatever" we still got to lose "our god-damned minds" (usually it's our "fucking minds", but he changed it a bit), but he did not want us to be heard in New York Fucking City. I have say, I missed that a little bit. Thought I was tired of it, but I did miss it.

Had this crazy couple next to me...the guy ended up going down about 1/2 through the set. His girl would glance over, check on him, and then continue to rock out with me! Moderation folks, it's all about moderation!

We didn't stick around for ShineDown. We both had to work the next day, and The Todd had to drive to West Palm Beach, so we called it a night after Smack. I was home by 9:15pm, which was nice.

So, that's it for me...I'll try to get some of my pictures up soon,

Hey, xXxGODSMACKxXx, I think we might have met a show many years ago, but I don't remember your name. Can I count on you to be my pit-pal at the next one?

Did you get Staind stuff for your neice? Glad you had a good time and you should have let loose, who cares what people think, lol.
I saw your awesome pix on FB, great shots!
And I admit I am thankful Sully showed up for Hamilton last year, yeah I would have been disappointed BUT loved meeting Robbie, he was my fav. Everyone should be happy to meet 75% cause without them it wouldn't be GS. Each one was awesome to meet, smiles and small chit chat, ahhh life is good!

i think also you want to meet the whole band, i know Neil Peart doesn't do M&G, he's not comfy with it. That is fine, his decision but personally I wanna meet all Rush, but we know that Neil doesn't do them so I guess there is no surprise that he's a no show. I'm sure Sully is pulled all over being the frontman and sometimes has other things before the show. At least for our M&G we were warned he wasn't feeling well and might not show up. Must be tough to be such a wanted man lol.
and XXXxx.....XXXxxx you made some very good points. I see Aerosmith every year and it's always different, something new add.

    Anyway...

No, wasn't able to. I had a really cute "Flat Crickett" made up, too! It was her head on a anime girl body (she loves anime). I tried to take a picture holding up Flat Crickett with Staind in the back ground, but we couldn't get lined up correctly to see both her and the band.

I have failed as the Coolest Aunt Ever.

I'm everyone's pit pal! Except for the people I hit.....

I wish I could have seen those new year's shows but I was still in Boston and by the time I moved to Florida they were done with them. But even then, they still played a good variation of songs and the only time they didn't headline was the Metallica tour. Then a few years later, Cruefest, Mayhem Fest, MassChaos (with the usual festival setlist plus The Oracle) and Uproar have literally been the same setlists and show. Tampa didn't even get Whiskey Hangover as I recall (although not their fault if I remember correctly). The only variation since 2009 was the very first leg of the Oracle tour.

I have an on-stage set list from that show...Whiskey Hangover was supposed to be played, but it was crossed out. I really like that song and was disappointed they didn't play it.

I've heard that too but it was played on nearly every date on that CrueFest tour. I don't know, I just wish that they'd switch it up a little bit. Regardless, they are still my absolute favorite band (have been since the third grade) and I will never miss a show. I just want them to achieve the maximum success that they deserve!

I read that they had to have a new song for Cruefest so they came up with that one, but weren't too thrilled with it.

I think now it goes with 8:15 so maybe they should play it LOL.

    Danno, nice to see you.
