what colour would you suggest...i'm guessing you are going to say... black with white letters.
i think i'd go with a hint of yellow, green or orange. something other then white.. liven it up abit.
maybe a different font....this one is too thin....

Just any color. Yes it should be dark cuz dark is neutral. Black background with a similar colour overtop. There was nothing wrong with the previous layout.
